On U.S. Highway 50, this oasis in high desert country boasts 30 full grown Russian Olive trees and several full grown elms.
It is near numerous lakes—only two miles from Gunnison Bend Reservoir, for example, that offer bass fishing, swimming, boating, and a beach. If rockhounding is your passion, this area will thrill you with garnets, topaz, Apache tears, red beryl, and trilobites. This resort is a great destination spot for fishermen and rockhounds.
One of the major attractions in the area is the new Great Basin National Park that contains snowcapped Wheeler Peak and a wide variety of interesting terrain. You can explore groves of ancient bristlecone pine trees, among the oldest living plants in the world. The park also offers the Lehman Caves, where you may take guided tours of the beautiful limestone caverns.
The Utah Jazz and Blues Festival is held each summer in nearby Snowbird and is considered among the best outdoor concerts in the nation. For the past eight years, top jazz and blues performers have displayed their talent at the Snowbird Event Center during the last Friday and Saturday in July. Recent performers include Tuck and Patti, Gene Harris, Herbie Mann and Jasil Brazz, and blues guitarist Albert Collins.
Not far away is spectacular Timpanogos Cave —to reach it visitors must hike 1.5 miles over a challenging trail, which usually takes three hours round-trip. Park rangers provide guided tours through three interconnected limestone caverns that are connected by human-made tunnels. The temperature in the caverns is chilly, so a jacket is advised. The cave is open May through October.
The McCurdy Historic Doll Museum is an interesting attraction in Provo, less than 100 miles north of the resort. Beginning in 1910, Laura McCurdy Clark began collecting fine dolls from around the world. Today, the museum houses more than 4,000 dolls as well as other historic treasures.
Amenities: This resort has a large grass area, laundry room, and restrooms with showers. Nearby: fishing, rockhounding, exploring, boating, lake swimming, water skiing, hiking, boat ramp, and marina.
