Recreational opportunities in Wapakoneta and Auglaize County vary. Grand Lake St. Marys, about a 20-minute drive to the west, is the state's largest man-made lake. The state park here offers camping, boating, sailing, fishing, hunting, picnicking and swimming. Indian Lake, found about 30 miles to the east of Wapakoneta also offers water sports.

The city is home to a number of festivals, and as the county seat, hosts the Auglaize County Fair each year. Each September, the Wapakoneta Chamber of Commerce hosts the Indian Summer Festival, a celebration of the city's Indian heritage as well as the on-set of Indian Summer. The Apple Harvest Festival is celebrated at Maple Lane Farms each October. Golf courses are found in Wapakoneta at the Wapakoneta County Club.

Fort Amanda State Park, located nine miles north of Wapakoneta on Ohio 198, is the site of a military post from the War of 1812. The park is open daylight hours and features a monument as well as picnicking, hiking and shelter houses.
