Resort Profile

Being located on beautiful Wellesley Island, Seaway Island Resort offers fishing, boating, and underwater diving in crystal clear water plus a panoramic view of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Wellesley Island is one of more than 1,700 islands in the Thousand Island chain that has been called the playground of the St. Lawrence River. A ferry ride, boat tour, or helicopter flight will all allow you to see the islands and their majestic stone castles, quaint fishing villages, and beautiful scenery.

Some of the Alexandria Bay attractions that you won’t want to miss are: the guided tour through the 25-room Casa Blanca Mansion, built in 1892; the 120-room Boldt Castle, a full-sized replica of a Rhineland castle; and the panoramic view from the 1,000 Island Skydeck, an observation tower 400 feet above the river.

An interesting day trip is a visit to Clayton on the south bank of the St. Lawrence River at about the midway point of the Thousand Islands. Stop along the drive south on I-81 at La Fargeville to visit the exhibits depicting the area’s agricultural growth at the Agricultural Museum. Continue on to Watertown, noteworthy as the home of the Woolworth store chain and Fort Drum. Guided tours of the Black River Canyon, white-water raft trips down the river, Civil War memorabilia, Native American artifacts at the Jefferson County Historical Society mansion, and the hands-on science museum at the Sci-Tech Center of Northern New York are all activities that can be enjoyed in the city.

Follow the interstate back north, cross over the Thousand Islands Bridge and the Canadian border to visit the old-fashioned, historic city of Kingston, Ontario. Built in 1673 where Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence River, the city contains early Canadian landmarks and reminders of its earlier role as a strategic military stronghold. One of these is Old Fort Henry, a restored fort originally built during the War of 1812 that now serves as a living museum of military life during that era.

Said to be one of the most scenic drives in the region is the one along Loyalist Parkway, following 58 miles of the shoreline of Lake Ontario between Kingston and Trenton.
