Resort Profile

Located in Newaygo County, where the north of Michigan begins, Woodlands on the Lake provides outdoor lovers with a variety of year-round activities. Fishing and boating in the beautiful lakes and streams, hunting in the adjacent woods and fields, and cross-country skiing, along with the recreational amenities at the resort, provide something for everyone in the family.

Anytime of year is a good time to visit Woodlands on the Lake. The cold temperatures in winter offer a multitude of snow activities and gorgeous scenery. Boating and fishing for bass, bluegill, pike, perch, and salmon are popular summertime activities. And autumn, with its vivid red, purple, orange, and yellow colors, is an especially beautiful season.

If visiting at least one of the Great Lakes is on your itinerary, travel westward to see the sugary sand dunes on the shores of nearby Lake Michigan. The Gillette Visitors Center at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon has hands-on exhibits and displays telling the history of sand dunes, as well as the local plant and animal life. Here you can follow one of the nature trails that lead into the dunes environment. While you’re in Muskegon, you’ll want to tour the USS Silversides, a restored World War II submarine. Guides will take you through the submarine’s cramped compartments and give you an idea about what life was like for the sailors who worked on the submarine. Inland and to the south is Grand Rapids, an industrial and convention center aptly named for the rapids of the Grand River that flows just south of the city.

All ages will enjoy the John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids, where 500 animals representing more than 150 different species are housed in garden settings. Michigan’s second largest zoo features nocturnal animals, an aquarium, a reptile house, and a children’s petting zoo. History buffs will enjoy a visit to the Heritage Hill area, where nearly 100 historical homes can be seen.
