Canoe trips are the calling cards
of Rifle River Resort. Located in the Saginaw lowlands of eastern
Michigans Lower Peninsula, this summertime resort is more
than just a country retreat. The character of the river combines
with the nature and wildlife of the area to produce an unbeatable
location for a great getaway.
In a part of the state known for its river-riding opportunities,
the resort overlooks the Rifle River and affords excellent opportunities
for canoeing, fishing, and other activities. On-site
equipment rental, up-river transportation, and an easy-access boat
dock appeal to everyone in the family.
Nearby Au Sable State Forest provides ample opportunities to expand
explorations of the lands and waterways of the area. In addition
to boating, swimming, and fishing, it provides excellent hiking
trails. Nature lovers will also want to explore the Chippewa Nature
Center, which is less than an hour to the southwest, near Midland,
Michigan. This 1,000-acre preservation of woodlands, rivers, and
wetlands is
integrated with hiking trails and an arboretum, as well as a hands-on
museum and historical 19th century structures (including a restored
farm). Because Midland was the home of Herbert H. Dow, founder of
Dow Chemical Co, a visit to Midland is not complete without a tour
of the Dow Gardens, and the Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum, illustrating
the life, ingenuity, contributions, and heritage of this pioneer
of chemistry. The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio in Midland is also
worth a visit, evidencing a style that was strongly influenced by
the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
On the way back to Rifle River Resort, a drive up Highway 13 will
take you though Pinconning, the cheese capital of Michigan. The
road traverses agricultural and dairy farms and provides insight
into the diversity of this area. Despite the variety of things to
do and see here, the resort itself is the primary lure. Like a trip
down a friendly river, it beckons campers to come, enjoy, and relax.
