Resort Profile

Located in the wooded rolling hills of southwestern Michigan, American Campground’s Hartford Resort offers its guests an enjoyable stay with pleasant surroundings.

Just 30 miles to the west, the beauty of sugar-sand beaches and the dunes of Lake Michigan beckon to those who are interested in a wide variety of water activities, including charter fishing. For a real change of pace, be sure to travel south along the lake shoreline to the Warren Dunes State Park at Sawyer. Tower Hill with its 240-foot drop, and the winds from Lake Michigan, make it a perfect spot for year-round hang gliding.

Nearby Bridgman is the home of the Cook Nuclear Plant and Cook Energy Information Center. The Information Center contains a revolving 26-foot replica of the nuclear plant as well as an explanation of how it works. Also available is a tour of theaters containing information about energy, electricity, and nuclear power. A wide-screen film takes you into the nuclear plant and allows you to take a helicopter ride along Lake Michigan.

Railroad enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the historic Bangor Train Factory at Bangor, the only one of its kind in the nation that manufactures hand-built #1-gauge model trains. As you go further inland, you’ll want to stop at the vineyards and wineries in Paw Paw, where you can sample the wine and champagne and tour the cellars.

Approaching Kalamazoo to the east, stop along the way at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery and Michigan Fisheries Interpretive Center at Mattawan. Everything you want to know about fish life, fishing, and fishing gear and tackle are on display at the fish hatchery and center.

More than 100 antique and classic cars, a narrow-gauge locomotive, an antique horse-drawn fire engine, and a replica of the Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk are all exhibited at the Gilmore Classic Car Museum.
