Resort Profile

At the edge of Oconee National Forest on Lake Oconee, The North Shore Resort is built upon the site of the Old Carey Station Depot. Old train cars have become the resort’s accommodations, offices, comfort stations, and the clubhouse, making it one of the most unique campground resorts in North America. Here in Greene County, scenic Lake Oconee is a perfect site for fishing, boating, skiing, sailing, and swimming. The 19,050-acre lake, with its 235 miles of shoreline also offers picnic areas, beaches, and boat ramps and docks. Many Creek and Cherokee Indian artifacts can be found along the banks of Lake Oconee as well as in stream beds.

The 1807 Old Greene County “Gaol”, or jail, in Greensboro, intrigues present-day visitors. Harsh conditions were imposed on prisoners held in the underground cells of the jail which had no light or ventilation except for grated ceiling windows and underground doors. Leaving the forlorn depths of the jail behind, visitors find in Greensboro a city brimming with Antebellum homes, Victorian buildings, and a beautiful Greek Revival courthouse.

Four of the many magnificent golf courses in this “Classic South” Region of Georgia can be found right here in Greene County. Bordered on the west by Lake Oconee and on the east by Clark’s Hill Lake and the Savannah River, the region has six state parks and at least 26 golf courses.

The region is formed from two distinct geographical regions – making sightseeing very interesting – the Piedmont Plateau to the north and the Atlantic Coastal Plain to the south. A fall line, where rivers form falls and rapids, divides the rolling hills of the Piedmont or “upcountry” from the softer ground of the coastal flat land. Romantic travelers are sure to be charmed by the region’s covered bridges.
